Deep Impact (1998)

I watched this movie on opening day, drawn in by the fact that it featured Leelee Sobieski as Sarah Hotchner. I first discovered Leelee in Jungle 2 Jungle (1997), and something about her presence on screen immediately caught my attention. Maybe it was a young adult infatuation, or maybe it was her ability to bring sincerity and depth to every role she played. Whatever the reason, I made it a mission to see as many of her films as I could, and I’ve remained a fan ever since. While I haven’t seen every performance, several stand out as personal favorites — Never Been Kissed (1999), Here on Earth (2000), and The Glass House (2001) all showcase her range and quiet intensity.

Of course, the inclusion of Morgan Freeman as President Tom Beck sealed the deal for me. Freeman has long been one of my favorite actors, and his calm authority and emotional depth elevate any film he’s in. My favorite moment in this movie comes when he first meets Jenny Lerner (played by Téa Leoni) in that dimly lit basement. The scene itself stretches believability — the setting feels almost too convenient — but Freeman’s performance grounds it completely. His delivery, his posture, and the subtle weight in his voice make it one of those moments that linger long after the credits roll.

Looking back, this film represents a perfect blend of nostalgia and admiration. It’s tied to a time when I was discovering actors, stories, and emotions that shaped how I view movies today. Between Sobieski’s youthful sincerity and Freeman’s commanding presence, it remains one of those films I revisit not just for the story, but for the memories it evokes every single time.
